From Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang by Boat on the Mekong

By Mekong Cruises · 5 min read

The most memorable way from northern Thailand to Luang Prabang is the river. The journey crosses the Thai–Lao border at the Mekong, then follows the river for two days through the hills of northern Laos, past villages that are reached mostly by boat.

This guide takes you through the route step by step, from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, with the times, the border formalities and the choice between the public slow boat and a cruise. It also covers the trip in the other direction.

Step 1: from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai to the border

From Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai airport is the nearest airport to the border: it is 134 km from Huay Xai, about a 2-hour drive. We can arrange the transfer for you.

You do not need to spend a night at the border. If you leave Chiang Rai early in the morning, you can cross and board the boat the same day.

From Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is further away. By private car, the drive between Chiang Mai airport and the border takes about 5 hours without stops. As our team meets downstream guests at the border between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m., we recommend spending the night before in Chiang Khong or in Huay Xai.

Step 2: crossing the border into Laos

The crossing is at the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, between Chiang Khong and Huay Xai. Both immigration checkpoints are open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

  1. Go to the Chiang Khong immigration checkpoint, before the bridge, and complete the Thai exit formalities.
  2. Cross the bridge by the official shuttle or a van: 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Arrive at Lao immigration in Huay Xai, where our team welcomes you on downstream cruises.

We can also arrange the Chiang Khong to Huay Xai transfer for US$ 38 per trip. The border crossing, the visa and where to sleep are covered in detail in our guide to Huay Xai.

Most travellers need a Lao visa. A visa on arrival is issued at the border in Huay Xai; you can also apply for an eVisa before you travel, choosing the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge (Chiang Khong – Huay Xai) as your entry point.

Step 3: two days on the Mekong

On our downstream cruises, a shared minibus takes you from the border to the pier, and the boat casts off at 10:30 a.m. The first day brings a Lao lunch on board and a stop at a Khamu or Hmong village in the hills before you reach Pakbeng for the night.

The second day starts at 8:00 a.m. The boat stops at Ban Baw, a village known for its lao-lao whisky, then at the Pak Ou Caves and their thousands of Buddha statues, and arrives at Calao pier in Luang Prabang at 5:00 p.m. Shared minibus transfers to your hotel are available.

Public slow boat or cruise?

The public slow boat follows the same route over the same two days. It is the cheapest option, but it is transport only: you organise the border, your food and your room in Pakbeng yourself, and sit on wooden benches. A cruise adds a comfortable boat, lunch on board, an English-speaking guide, the village and cave stops, and help at the border.

Our side-by-side comparison of the public slow boat and a cruise sets out prices and what is included.

The other way: Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai

Our upstream cruises leave Calao pier in Luang Prabang at 7:00 a.m., with breakfast on board, stop at the Pak Ou Caves and reach Pakbeng around 5:00 p.m. The next morning, the boat leaves Pakbeng at 7:00 a.m., stops at a hill village and arrives in Huay Xai around 5:00 p.m. Your guide then accompanies you to the border by shared minibus.

The schedule leaves time to cross into Thailand and continue to Chiang Rai the same day. Heading to Chiang Mai? We can arrange a private car to Chiang Mai airport, about 5 hours without stops, for US$ 237 per trip. We do not guarantee connections with night buses from Huay Xai.

A guest’s review

Wonderful cruise! We loved every minute of our two-day cruise in Laos! The journey from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai. The guide, Sommay, was excellent: funny, informative and very attentive to his guests.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang by boat?

Two days. Leave Chiang Rai early, drive about 2 hours to the border, and board in Huay Xai the same morning. After a night in Pakbeng, you reach Luang Prabang at 5:00 p.m. on the second day.

Can I go from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang by boat?

Yes, but the boat starts at the border, not in Chiang Mai. Allow about 5 hours by car from Chiang Mai to the border; we recommend a night in Chiang Khong or Huay Xai before boarding.

Do I need to book the boat in advance?

Public slow boat tickets are sold at the pier and by guesthouses and travel kiosks. A Mekong Cruises cruise is booked online, with instant confirmation; booking ahead guarantees your place and lets us plan your welcome at the border.

Is the Thailand–Laos border safe?

Yes. It is a welcoming and safe area for travellers; standard travel precautions are enough.
